Turmeric powder is a bright yellow powder made by dry grinding mature turmeric rhizomes (underground stems). The use of turmeric for coloring, flavoring, cosmetic and medicinal purposes dates back to the ancient Vedic culture of India. Used in almost all Indian curries, this spice has almost no calorific value (1 tablespoon = 24 calories) and zero cholesterol. It is rich in dietary fiber, iron, potassium, magnesium and vitamin B6.
India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of turmeric in the world. Indian turmeric is considered to be the best in the world market because of its high curcumin content. India accounts for about 80 per cent of world turmeric production and 60 per cent of world exports.
